About Philadelphia

Philadelphia was founded in 1680 as an English colony by William Penn, the Governor
of Pennsylvania.

Placed between the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers, it grew in size and importance until it became the largest city in the British Empire by 1770.

As the United States was formed and grew, Philadelphia played a central role, especially as an industrial city as New York City and Washington D.C. grew along the northeast corridor of the United States. The Philadelphia metropolitan area is currently home to approximately 6 million people, and is world-renown for its museums, shopping, cultural activities and nightlife.
